Jörg Schauer - The Watchbuilder
1990, at the age of 22, Jörg Schauer becomes an independent watchmaker. His target is to manufacture high-class wrist watches wich combine demanding technical solutions with exceptional design. At the beginning, this target is achieved by constructing timepieces to the ideals of competent customers - the cases are manily made of gold or platinum. But soon he also starts to create watches pleasing his personal taste.
Within 5 years more than 400 watches are made; they sell worldwide and make entrance into many collections.
1995 he carries out his plan to establish the brand "Jörg Schauer" in Engelsbrand/Black Forest, and presents the first collection. Trademark is a twelvefold screwed on bezel.
Design, prototype production, movement modification and refinement, case production, coating of the dials with fine lacquer and printing of the typographical versions on those - all this is accomplished by Jörg Schauer and his few, above-average qualified co-workers. (Necessary support is preferably obtained from suppliers of the region.) This comprehensive range of activities enables Jörg Schauer to maintain the flexibility he achieved over the years - despite the switch to serial manufacture, customers can still order (serial) models to be alterd to their individual specifications.
The major markets are Japan, the United States, China and, of course, Germany Distribution is mainly direct or by importeurs.
1996 STOWA is acquired by purchase. This rich is tradition manufacturer with a continuous production since 1927, the year of its foundation, is transferred to Engelsbrand.
An airmanwatch with a Unitas hand-wound movement is the first model conducted by Jörg Schauer (introduced in 1996).
Since the year 2005 the collection consists of these five watch lines: Antea, Exima, Airman, Marine and Seatime. The STOWA-museum is now domiciled in Engelsbrand, too. Meanwhile it contains more than 200 historic watches, this makes it a source for "new" ideas. Visitors are welcomed every Friday.
Distribution is directly.

| STOWA history |
STOWA. SINCE 1927
In the beginning, there was Walter Storz. In 1927, he founded his own company, branching out from his father’s large watch factory in Hornberg/Kinzigtal.
At first, Walter Storz tried his hand at representing small Swiss watch factories. In 1935, he founded his own manufacturing business in Pforzheim, in a rented space for the first three years. In 1938, he erected his own factory building. The company grew. The STOWA brand - named after the first syllables of Walter Storz’s name - came to stand for quality throughout the world.
The factory building was destroyed near the end of the war, on February 23rd 1945. The situation in Pforzheim having grown increasingly difficult, Walter Storz moved to Rheinfelden, setting up his own manufacturing building there in 1951. Among other things, STOWA also built shock protection (RUFA), still used in many PUW and Durowe watch movements today.
At the same time, the building in Pforzheim was reconstructed, and the production capacity of both factories was expanded enormously. The proportion of exports rose to almost 50%, and STOWA watches were distributed to some 80 countries worldwide.
In the early 1960s, Werner Storz, Walter Storz’s son, joined the company, assuming responsibility, above all, for strenuous overseas trips. Werner Storz continued to successfully manage STOWA’s business through 1996, before retiring and looking for a successor. He found one in Jörg Schauer from Engelsbrand, who has continued the uninterrupted manufacture of STOWA watches, in keeping with the intentions of their founder and his family, ever since.
And so STOWA’s history is still being written successfully today! |
